Tempered vs Laminated Glass: Which is Safer?

Both tempered and laminated glass are classified as "safety glass" — but they behave very differently when broken. The right choice depends on whether you're protecting against impact, fall-through, or both.

Tempered glass

Annealed glass that has been heated and rapidly cooled, making it 4–5× stronger than ordinary glass. When it breaks, it crumbles into small blunt fragments that are unlikely to cause serious cuts. Used for shower doors, partitions, frameless doors, table tops.

Laminated glass

Two glass panes bonded around a clear plastic interlayer (PVB or SGP). When it breaks, the fragments stay stuck to the interlayer — the glass remains in the frame and continues to provide a barrier. Used where fall-through must be prevented: balcony railings, overhead glazing, security glazing.

Side-by-side

  • On impact: Tempered shatters into pebbles. Laminated cracks but holds together.
  • Fall-through risk: Tempered = open hole. Laminated = barrier remains.
  • Sound insulation: Laminated is significantly better thanks to the interlayer.
  • Cost: Laminated typically 1.5–2× the cost of tempered.
  • Strength against breakage: Tempered handles higher stress before breaking.

Which to use where

  • Shower doors: Tempered (8–10 mm)
  • Office partitions: Tempered (10–12 mm)
  • Balcony railings: Laminated tempered (13.52 mm minimum)
  • Pool fences: Laminated tempered
  • Overhead skylights: Laminated (legal requirement in most cases)
  • Storefront glass: Laminated for security; tempered for budget
  • Tabletops: Tempered

The hybrid: laminated tempered glass

For balcony railings and overhead glazing, the gold standard is laminated tempered glass — two tempered panes laminated together. You get the strength of tempered with the fail-safe barrier of laminated. We use this on most UAE villa balconies.

FAQ

Is laminated glass bulletproof?

Standard laminated is impact-resistant but not bulletproof. Specialised multi-layer laminated glass (security grade) is rated for ballistic resistance.

Can I cut tempered glass?

No — tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled or modified after tempering. It must be sized and tempered together.

Does UAE code require laminated glass on balconies?

Most consultants and developers specify laminated glass for any balcony railing above ground floor — and we recommend it as standard.
